Correction: Comparison of Reuters's ART and Telerate's Teletrac in last month's MTR misstated ART's analytic capabilities. Terminal can calculate moving averages, RSIs, and other standard analytics. It cannot perform user-defined analytics or compute derivative instruments, as Teletrac can.
Lotus Development Corp.'s disenchantment with computer retailers as channel for selling Signal quote service is reflected in new ad campaign. Besides offering $100 rebate, ads for first time allow customers to buy Signal directly from Lotus. Despite this, Lotus/Equatorial joint sales campaign (MTR, February 1986) has added five new retailers, including New York's 47th Street Computer. 47th is said to be Lotus's star performer in overall Signal sales.
Lotus, meanwhile, has added second FM subcarrier in New York City to improve Wall Street coverage for Signal quote service. WPAT-FM has transmitter atop World Trade Center and puts stronger signal into financial district than existing Lotus facility WLTW, which transmits from Empire State Building.
Telerate, Inc. has chosen 19.2 kilobit/second Mainstream Data, Ltd. technology for new FM sideband service in New York City (MTR, February 1986). Company will add second subcarrier to WBAI-FM to retransmit its Equatorial satellite service. One subcarrier is already in use for PDQ hand-held service. Telerate vice president, engineering, Phil Long confirms tests, reports he's "very, very pleased to date with the result." Says Long: "The jury's still out, but I'm quite sanguine that this will pan out."
Telerate is also "pursuing the possibility of mounting a PDQ-type service" in London, says Long. Hand-held service primarily for forex traders has about 500 customers in New York and Chicago and is thought to be hugely profitable. With London's interest in forex, comparable service could be even bigger there. Telerate has been testing FM sideband transmission over LBC outlet of Independent Broadcasting Authority, which is anxious to get into subcarrier business.
Equatorial Communications Co. is trimming work force and work week to bring production and inventories in line with demand. Firm says 36 of 700 employees -- about five per cent -- will be let go. About 180 workers in manufacturing will have work week cut from five days to four for third quarter. Shortened week will end in October, when Equatorial expects orders to cut into backlog.
Bonneville Telecommunications Corp. plans to trim FM sideband network roster of 45 stations to about 18. Company officials decline to discuss plans, but one source confirms that "there are just a lot of radio stations out there that [BTC has] been supporting for a long time that [they] just can't make a business case for." Bonneville has already let FM lease in Detroit expire quietly. "[They] had no business in Detroit," says our source.
Market Vision Corp. will add variety of new data to MV1000 feed beginning in August. New information available on optional basis includes equity prices for S&P 500, forex prices on eight currencies from Chase Manhattan and Midland Bank, and LIFFE futures data.
Pinstripe Software has announced joint marketing alliance with Natural Microsystems Corp. Through Sept. 30th, customers buying Pinstripe's "Visible Asset" broker productivity software get free Natural Microsystems "Watson" voice/data modem. Included is utility to allow Visible Asset customer or prospect files to drive Watson autodialer. Visible Asset runs on IBM XT or AT with 512K RAM, is compatible with Lotus Signal service, and costs $1,495.
PC Quote, Inc. says it closed previously announced deal to form PC Quote International (MTR, May 1986). Two Bridge Holding affiliates, Bridge Europe and Bridge Far East, purchased aggregate of 750,000 PC Quote common shares at $5 each, or total of $3.75 million.
CMQ Communications, Inc. signed third-party maintenance agreement with service unit of Dow Jones & Co. Dow Jones Service will provide U.S.-wide installation and service on CMQ Autoquote and Multiport II terminals.
