Keeping an Eye on the Prize
The joke points to a standard foible attributed to research scientists who get too detached from real-word problems in order to simplify their analysis. How many financial technologists can be accused of the same thing?
Right now, the industry-and technology in general-is going through a huge evolutionary leap from server-based to cloud-based computing. Right now, the large brokers are developing their internal cloud expertise and spending a lot of capital in the process. It is enough to make any technologist's head spin.
However, even though IT and the business are working tighter than ever before, there is the temptation for firms to think that technology is their core business and take their eyes off their core competence-with bad results.
On a separate note, this is the last issue of DWT for our publisher Dan Morgan, who is departing the publishing industry to work in the family business. We wish him all the best and hope our paths will cross again. Dan started as publisher a few months after I took over as editor and together we revamped the face of DWT and launched the Best Execution event, in conjunction with sibling publication Buy-Side Technology, in the U.S. and in the U.K. It has been a fun couple of years and he will be missed.
