People Moves: Etrading Software, MarketAxess, Trumid, Nasdaq, and more

A look at the past month’s people moves in the capital markets technology and data space, including Matthijs Geneste (pictured), who will head up EU regulatory data services for Etrading Software.

Etrading Software appoints senior regulator to drive European consolidated tape strategy

Etrading Software, a global regulatory data provider, has announced the opening of its Dutch office alongside the appointment of Matthijs Geneste, from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets, to the newly created role of head of EU regulatory data services.

He will play a central role in the growth of Etrading’s regulatory data services, focusing on the development of reference data and the consolidated tape as a vehicle for transparency in European capital markets. His responsibilities will include playing a pivotal role in the company’s bid to become the provider for both bond and derivative consolidated tapes.

As senior supervisor in AFM’s Capital Markets Supervisory team, Geneste worked closely on the reviews of Mifid II and was responsible for leading the regulator’s consolidated tape regulatory sandbox. 

Prior to joining the Dutch regulator, he spent more than five years at ABN AMRO Clearing Bank N.V. as a global coordinator for regulatory affairs and derivative regulation expert. He also has six years of strategic consulting experience on behalf of global enterprises, institutional investors, and public authorities. 

Geneste will head up the new office in the Netherlands and join its group leadership team. The new office will provide an EU platform for initiatives such as the consolidated tape and other reference data initiatives. It will also act as point of contact for ETS’s Digital Token Identifier Foundation to EU regulators interested in Digital Token Identifier, an ISO standard for digital tokens.

MarketAxess taps Fiszel Bieler as new CFO

MarketAxess Holdings, an operator of a leading electronic trading platform for fixed-income securities, has named Ilene Fiszel Bieler as its next chief financial officer. She is expected to start in late May 2024, superseding Christopher Gerosa, who left the company on January 31, 2024.

Fiszel Bieler most recently served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of State Street Global Markets and Global Credit Finance and as global head of investor relations for State Street. She previously had served as head of investor relations and strategy for the Americas at Barclays and head of fixed-income investor and rating agency relations at Citigroup. 

She will be based in New York.

Trumid hires ex-Neptune CTO to head up new protocol

Neptune’s former chief technology and product officer, Gavin Collins, has joined Trumid to oversee its dealer-to-client Attributed Trading (AT) protocol. In this newly established role, Collins is responsible for the development and expansion of Trumid’s established AT network, The Desk first reported.

Trumid AT allows dealers to stream prices on a targeted basis, negotiate bilaterally, and execute, with post-trade processing and rate hedging flexibility.

Collins joined Neptune in 2021 as chief technology and product officer, responsible for all aspects of engineering and product strategy. Before joining Neptune, Collins held senior technology and product management roles at UBS, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, NatWest, and Citi, and is a specialist in digital innovation, transformation, and product strategy. 

Nasdaq Private Market adds to capital markets division

Nasdaq Private Market, a marketplace for the trading of private company stock, has hired Michael Buono and Phil Germann as directors within its capital markets division. Both will be tasked with driving shareholder, investor, and global bank adoption of the NPM SecondMarket trading marketplace. 

At NPM, Buono and Germann will focus on sourcing transactions, business development, and product innovation. This announcement comes on the heels of the companys completion of a $62.4 million Series B funding round.

Prior to his new role, Buono spent five years at EquityZen, where he served as the head of the institutional investment sales desk. He was also an investment committee member for the companys flagship growth fund. He also spent two years at UBS in a variety of roles.

Germann joins NPM from EquityZen as well, where he spent six years. He served as head of the institutional markets/broker-dealer sales desk. He was also an investment committee member for a number of the company’s managed fund vehicles. He also previously worked at Fidelity within the investment solutions division.

They will both be based in New York and report to Sharif Khaleel, managing director and head of execution at Nasdaq Private Market.

HKEX adds trio to board of directors

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited have added the Hong Kong government’s appointments of Chan Kin-por and Peter Yan to its board of directors. Susan Chow has also been re-appointed to the board.

The terms of the three directors will begin at the conclusion of HKEX’s 2024 annual general meeting (AGM) and will end at the conclusion of the AGM in 2026. Laura M Cha and Benjamin Hung will retire from the board at the conclusion of the 2024 AGM.

Francine Fang joins Balyasny as global head of systematic

Balyasny Asset Management has tapped Francine Fang to lead their growing quant business. 

In this newly created role, she will be responsible for growing systematic strategies, working with investment teams to help them scale. 

Prior to joining BAM, Fang spent 8 years at Point 72, most recently as deputy head of investments at Cubist Systematic Strategies. She was actively involved in all aspects of the quant business, including supervising quantitative portfolio managers, hiring teams, and managing risk and capital allocation.

BNP Paribas Exane grows global team

BNP Paribas Exane, a provider of equity research and a unit of BNP Paribas, has tapped five senior research analysts for its US analyst team.

Moses Sutton has been appointed head of clean energy research and will lead the clean energy and infrastructure research team. He joins from Wellington Management, where he covered global renewables.  Previously, he was a research analyst at Barclays, where he built and led the #2-ranked Institutional Investor team in alternative energy.

Sam McHugh has been appointed head of telecom equity research and will focus on growing the bank’s US telecoms and media coverage, while also taking on enhanced responsibilities as a global coordinator for telecom research. He has been with BNP Paribas Exane for eight years, and was previously based in London, where he was the sector head for telecom research. Prior to joining BNP Paribas Exane in 2015, McHugh spent five years at Sanford Bernstein on the European telecom research team.

Stefan Slowinski has been appointed global head of software research, leading the coverage on large cap US software and internet stocks, and coordinating BNP Paribas Exane’s global technology research product. He has been with BNP Paribas Exane for more than six years. He was previously the head of research at Haitong Securities for Europe and Latin America, and deputy global head of equity and credit research at Societe Generale.

Andrew Buscaglia has been appointed senior analyst for US industrial technology, and will cover diversified industrial IoT applications, including automation equipment, instrumentation, and sensors. He has been covering the industrials sector since 2011 and joined BNP Paribas Exane from Berenberg, where he was a senior analyst and US industrials sector head. 

Kevin Grundy has been appointed senior analyst for US beverages and household products.  Previously, he was an equity research analyst at Jefferies for more than 10 years, and he held a similar position at Morgan Stanley. 

All five will report to Michael Rietbrock, director of equity research for the Americas at BNP Paribas Exane.

In addition to the new hires, BNP Paribas Exane plans to expand its coverage from 275 US stocks to more than 500 US stocks by 2025, with an initial focus on the technology, media, and telecommunications, consumer, healthcare and industrials sectors. This expansion of US stocks coverage is supported by the bank’s plans to grow the number of analysts, sector specialists, traders, sales traders, and salespeople it employs. 

Acadian’s Buzzelli joins Meradia to lead data consulting

Reference data industry veteran Brian Buzzelli has joined Meradia, an investment operations and technology consultancy, as director and head of the firm’s data practice, to deepen its expertise in data management and data quality.

Buzzelli spent the past eight years as head of enterprise data management at Boston-based quantitative asset manager Acadian Asset Management, prior to which he held the same role for the US at Nomura Securities. Before that, he served as Americas head of pricing and reference data at Thomson Reuters, prior to which he was VP and product manager for managed reference data services at BNY Mellon.

In 2022, Buzzelli’s book, Data Quality Engineering in Financial Services, was published by O’Reilly Media, a publisher and training company focusing on technical subjects. In his new role at Meradia, he will leverage the frameworks developed and outlined in his book to provide “a more rigid structure” to the firm’s data consulting projects.

“I’m providing ‘licensability’ for my playbook and integrating that into their data management approach,” Buzzelli tells WatersTechnology. “My framework, added to their expertise in performance measurement, aligns with middle- and back-office transformation and operational efficiency.”

Ex-BlackRock MD joins Clearwater Analytics

Clearwater Analytics, a provider of SaaS-based investment management, accounting, reporting, and analytics solutions, has appointed Keith Viverito as managing director for EMEA

Prior to joining Clearwater, he served as a managing director at BlackRock, leading business development for the Aladdin Business across EMEA. In his new role, Viverito will be responsible for accelerating Clearwater’s global expansion and strengthening its go-to-market strategy.

Viverito has held executive and senior leadership roles at IHS Markit, FactSet, Thomson Reuters, and Tradeweb, with a focus on international markets. 

Siepe expands leadership team 

Siepe, a provider of technology-enabled services, compliance, and reporting for high yield and private credit has named Shelly Torkelson as director of Software-as-a-Service, and Teresa Lange Pierson as director of compliance.

Torkelson brings more than 20 years of experience in the collateralized debt and loan obligations industry. She joins after spending a decade as managing director of client service at Virtus Partners (acquired by FIS in 2019), overseeing the firm’s CLO, fund, and middle-office services. Prior to that, she was vice president for the corporate trust business at JP Morgan Chase & Co., and later BNY Mellon, after the acquisition in 2006.

Lange Pierson has more than 30 years’ experience across the financial and private credit landscape, with more than two decades focused on compliance in CLO markets. Before joining Siepe, Teresa spent 22 years at BNY Mellon, where she was most recently director/senior group manager of corporate trust analytics, spearheading the global group’s management of CLO and asset-backed securities analytics.
