People Moves: ING, Clear Street, CME Group, Sifma, and more

A look at the past month’s people moves in the capital markets technology and data space.

ING appoints third CTO in less than a year

Dutch banking group ING has hired Daniele Tonella as CTO. He will succeed the bank’s chief operations and transformation officer, Marnix van Stiphout, who has served as interim CTO since November.

Görkem Köseoğlu, who joined ING in 2012, previously held the role for two months, beginning in September 2023. He succeeded Ron van Kemenade, who stepped down in April 2023, after 10 years with the bank, to become the COO at Lloyds.

Tonella was formerly the chief information officer and later CEO at Italian bank UniCredit, where he worked from 2017 to 2021. He previously held roles at AXA Group, Evalueserve, and Swiss Life. Having begun his career as a consultant, he worked at Mercer and McKinsey.

Clear Street hires former Cboe CEO Tilly

Multi-asset clearing platform Clear Street has brought on Edward Tilly, former CEO of Cboe, as president. Tilly will work with Chris Pento, CEO of the $2 billion fintech, to lead the company through its next phase of growth.

Tilly served as the CEO of the Chicago-based options exchange for 10 years before resigning in September over undisclosed personal relationships with colleagues, the Wall Street Journal reported. During his tenure, he oversaw the growth of the exchange from a $2 billion market cap to more than $18 billion, a period that included the acquisition of BATS Global Exchange in 2017.

Broadridge hires Runacres for Asia-Pacific president

Broadridge has appointed David Runacres as president of the Asia-Pacific region. Runacres joins from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), where was head of Japan for 12 years. At Broadridge, he will serve as senior country officer for Japan, a market that is key to the company’s investment and growth strategy.

At LSEG, Runacres led the integration of Refinitiv in Japan and expanded LSEG’s presence in the region. Previously, Runacres has worked in sales roles at SunGard Systems and Thomson Financial. He has been based in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo throughout his career.

TP Icap hires three regional CEOs to its energy and commodity division

London-based broker TP Icap’s energy and commodity division has appointed three regional CEOs: David Silbert for the Americas, Joachim Emanuelsson for Emea, and Tom Fox Hughes for Asia-Pacific.

Silbert joins from commodities trading firm Trailstone Group, where he was founder and CEO. He was also previously the managing director and head of global commodities at Deutsche Bank from 2007 to 2013, and Emea head of commodities at Merrill Lynch, following its acquisition of Entergy-Koch Trading, where he headed up its European division.

Emanuelsson comes to TP Icap from SCB Group, a low-carbon commodity broking and advisory firm he co-founded over a decade ago. He began at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and Credit Suisse.

Hughes was previously TP Icap’s commercial manager for Asia-Pacific, based in Singapore. He joined the company from Freight Investor Services, where he was a managing director.

Sifma brings on Goldman exec as MD and head of technology

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (Sifma) has hired Stephen Byron as managing director and head of technology, operations, and business continuity. Byron joins from Goldman Sachs, where he was vice president and operations senior leader of equities post-trade transformation and strategy.

He will serve as the industry association’s principal liaison with member operations personnel and will manage relationships with relevant regulators, technology providers, and industry utilities. At Goldman, Byron oversaw the firm’s transition to T+1 accelerated settlement.

Liquidnet recruits new Americas head of international

TP Icap-owned trading venue Liquidnet has hired Jeffery Crane as head of international in the Americas. The hire is part of Liquidnet’s investment in its cross-border business. In the role, Crane will facilitate live trading of international markets through low-touch and block trading, as well as hand-offs of overnight orders to international execution desks.

He joins Liquidnet from SageTrader, where he served as managing director and head of sales, and oversaw new business growth for domestic and international trading. Prior to SageTrader, Crane spent more than 20 years with Instinet, where he held various roles, including managing the company’s cross-border business as head of the international desk in New York.

He will report to Alan Polo, Liquidnet’s head of equity sales and trading for the Americas.

CME Group hires global head of fixed income

CME Group has hired Mike Dennis as global head of fixed income. Dennis will oversee global benchmark futures and options contracts on the secured overnight financing rate (SOFR) and US Treasuries, the company’s most actively traded contracts. He will also lead CME-owned BrokerTec, acquired in 2018.

Dennis will report to the group’s CEO, Terry Duffy. He joins from ABN Amro Clearing, where he was principal, management team member, and chief commercial officer. Dennis was previously director of prime brokerage and clearing services at Societe Generale. He began his career at JP Morgan in Chicago and worked as a proprietary trader in the early 2000s.

Tim McCourt will continue to lead the group’s other contracts including equity indexes, foreign exchange, cryptocurrency futures and options, and its EBS spot FX platform.

Temenos appoints chief marketing officer and EVP of global alliances

Temenos has made two executive appointments in what officials say is a move to accelerate business growth and capture the market opportunity in software-as-a-service (SaaS) and in the US. Isabelle Guis joins as chief marketing officer and member of the executive committee, reporting to CEO Jean-Pierre Brulard.

Monty Bhatia has been appointed executive vice president of global alliances and partner ecosystem, reporting to chief revenue officer William Moroney.

Based in the US, Guis will lead Temenos’ go-to-market, product and solutions positioning as well as demand generation and marketing communications activities. She previously held roles at Salesforce, Commvault, and blue-chip companies such as Avaya and Cisco.

Bhatia will drive Temenos’ partner strategy to accelerate the growth of the company’s partner ecosystem. He brings over 30 years of industry experience in management and commercial leadership roles in software, infrastructure and technology companies. He’s previously held roles at VMware and Amazon Web Services.

Iress promotes Morgan to UK executive MD

Financial technology provider Iress has appointed Alistair Morgan as executive managing director of the UK, a newly created role.

In his new role, he assumes day-to-day leadership and oversight of Iress’ UK business strategy and financial outcomes. He will join Iress’ extended global leadership team, reporting into Iress’ group executive for wealth and the UK, Harry Mitchell, whose role and commitment to the UK remains unchanged.

Morgan has served as UK CFO for Iress since 2018. Previously, he has worked at Jaguar Land Rover and KPMG.

SkySparc hires treasury expert to drive Americas expansion.

Stockholm-based fintech consultancy SkySparc has hired Jeff Struzenski as Americas managing director.

He will aim to augment enterprise liquidity management processes across the financial operations of the region’s corporates and banks and be responsible for expanding SkySparc’s practice into the Americas. His focus will be on delivering integrated solutions that enhance existing financial systems, by providing end-to-end integration, improved reporting, data utilization, and automation.

Struzenski has held roles at Kyriba and EY, where he served as head of the New England wealth and asset management consulting practice.
