SIA: Spotlight On Technology

SIA SHOW SPECIAL REPORT

Welcome to DWT's Special Report on the Technology Management Conference and Exhibit of the Securities Industry Association (SIA).

From the flurry of news that this show generates, we will focus on the offerings of greatest interest to the sell-side (in alphabetical order) from the premier U.S. securities trading technology showcase. We have also included a floor plan, supplied by the SIA, for the vendors participating in the exhibition.

In case you haven't visited the SIA's Web site (www.sia.com), the event will take place Tuesday, June 8, to Thursday, June 10, at the Hilton New York, 1335 Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue), between 53rd and 54th Streets.

We have provided here (and on the front page) as much advance product news as possible. We have also compiled a list of the hottest parties.

The staff of DWT hopes that you will have a productive show.

ADP BROKERAGE SERVICES—3100 and 3101

ADP is launching its new browser-based corporate actions system, built in partnership with the XcitekSolutionsPlus (XSP) application. The solution offers exception-handling functionality and receives files from multiple vendors. A new GUI is also included, allowing managers to receive an overall view of exceptions and their statuses, with tools to manage the STP workflow. The XSP system is integrated with the brokerage processing services (BPS) solution, ADP's back-office suite, and all data required for corporate actions processing is maintained on the BPS engine.

ANTS—1710

ANTs Software, a vendor of SQL database management systems, will announce that the flagship ANTs Data Server (ADS) product now supports Microsoft Windows 2003 and XP; Sun Microsystems' Solaris 10; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and Fedora Core 2; and SuSe Linux. The new capabilities more than double the number of platforms supported by the ANTs Data Server, officials say.

AVISTAR COMMUNICATIONS—1520

Avistar Communications, a provider of video collaboration software, has moved its Avistar Community Exchange (ACV), built for hub-and-spoke configurations centered around a primary customer, to an environment hosted by DataPipe, a managed hosting company (TTW, April 7, 2003). There are 10 firms in the initial launch group, says John Carlson, vice president of product marketing, Avistar. Centrally deploying the system allows for better information sharing, officials say.

AVOCENT DIGITAL DESKTOPS—3118

Avocent Digital Desktops officials will announce that they have signed Abel/Noser, an agency-only broker with a membership on the NYSE. Abel/Noser built an application including Avocent Digital Desktops Cstations and flat-panel display monitors on the trading floor and has relocated PCs to a secured, climate controlled server room. Avocent offers its Digital Extension Technology, which extends the PCI bus, enabling trading floors to "backrack" desktop systems.

AXS-ONE—1434

AXS-One, a vendor of communications archiving and workflow software, will announce a partnership with RedFile, a digital risk and information management solutions provider, with RedFile acting as a reseller of AXS-One's e-mail and instant message archive software, and providing a hosted option for AXS-One user firms wishing to outsource their archiving operations.

CITY NETWORKS—1853

Software provider for treasury and derivative markets, City Networks, will tout its latest upgrade to its CityNet Conversation Checker that now includes support for currency options. The software automatically stores conversations from Reuters print outputs and then checks and issues deal tickets for potentially missed trades on a daily basis. Previously, this offering automated foreign exchange (FX) and money market (MM) transactions, but currency options have recently been added to further support derivatives products. City Networks will start with the addition of vanilla currency options and plans to expand to more complicated assets like exotic options and prime brokerage.

EMC—SIASPONSOR—NOBOOTH

Information and storage management vendor EMC Corp. plans to announce the launch of new multiple products that will ease the compliance burden on EMC end-users via information lifecycle management (ILM). The company's new EMC Proven Content Archiving and Retrieval Solution (CARS) automates regulatory compliance by centralizing online document and records management with an integrated solution to capture, store and rapidly retrieve content in any format from any source. EMC Proven Solution of E-mail Archiving optimizes placement of e-mail, helping organizations address cost and compliance objectives—from faster upgrades and better user experiences to the most stringent regulations. For content addressed storage (CAS), there's the latest release of EMC Centera CAS that offers new retention classes, audited delete and configurable default retention period compliance functionality.

ENIGMATEC—4124

Enigmatec and Sonic Software will announce a joint technology partnership to deliver enterprise grids for financial services. The partnership combines the distributed services architecture and remote management capabilities of Sonic's Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), the leading enterprise service bus with the automated policy-based management system of the Enigmatec Execution Management System (EMS). Aligning these two products allows business managers to write policies that have implications throughout the infrastructure, marrying service oriented architecture (SOA) and grid-computing concepts, says Duncan Johnston-Watt, CTO, Enigmatec. "Think of it as 'programming the infrastructure,'" Johnston-Watt says. "EMS is a management layer between business objectives driving the enterprise and the IT resources needed to implement them. EMS can deploy policies and parameters, from price updates per stock to CPU utilization per machine, both tuned relative to trade volume." At booth 1402, Sonic Software will showcase version 5.5 of its ESB, intended to support SOAs that need continuous availability. ESB 5.5 features hot fail-over and software-based configuration, eliminating the need to deploy any specialized hardware, officials say.

GL TRADE AMERICAS—1745

GL Trade recently announced it is the first ISV to acquire network connectivity provider status from the Swiss Exchange (SWX) for its service bureau offering. The offering will allow firms much cheaper exchange connectivity with vastly reduced hardware costs compared to maintaining direct exchange connectivity. The vendor is currently finalizing connectivity agreements with three SWX member firms and is expecting a dozen clients to connect over the course of 2004. In addition, the vendor is also set to launch a new product, GL Tactics, which will allow users more functionality in terms of order entry and trading strategy execution. The first 12 tactics are expected to be available next month with six more scheduled for release later in the year. When launched, the tactics will be supported on 83 execution venues.

ILUMIN SOFTWARE SERVICES—1618

iLumin Software Services produces the Assentor line of products, which cover archiving, regulatory compliance, corporate supervision, mailbox management, discovery and litigation support. The latest release of iLumin's Assentor Discovery can work in conjunction with the Zantaz Digital Safe to help firms respond to litigation requests for emails, instant messages and attachments in a timely and efficient manner. With Assentor Discovery, existing Zantaz customers have access to their own data instead of relying on a third party to perform the discovery tasks. Assentor Discovery gives designated employees the power and authorization to instantly search and review archived content in response to a sensitive legal matter, be it through the Zantaz Digital Safe, Assentor Archive or other email repository.

IPC INFORMATION SYSTEMS—1509

Trading turret and communication platform vendor IPC Information Systems will roll out its Service Management Action Request Tool (SMART), a Web-based tool that allows for the remote configuration of trading systems. It lets authorized IPC technicians customize traders' desktops quickly, remotely and securely, boosting trading floor efficiency and greatly reducing implementation time. The company plans to announce this week the availability of two new applications developed for its IQMX Applications Module, Call Dashboard and Dynamic Directory. Call Dashboard, designed for large money managers, identifies the customer regardless of how the call originated: direct line, cell phone or work phone. The trader sets preferences in order to prioritize calls as well as selecting which historical details of a particular contact that will be displayed. The Dynamic Directory offers presence information in a custom fashion and also provides a text-based look-up feature that allows traders to search an online directory and present the search result as a sheet of contact buttons that can be tapped to place a call.

LAVA TRADING—2501

Order routing and execution provider Lava Trading will tout its soon-to-be released electronic foreign exchange (FX) LavaFX platform, which is due out this quarter. Other new offerings from the company include its recently released sell-side order management system (OMS) ColorPalette as well as its LavaPI, an enhancement to the Lava ColorBook system that leverages Lava's extensive network and large order flow to help reduce costs and improve execution quality. Lava will also have on display SmartPost, which utilizes historical trading patterns and other information to provide more intelligent posting and market making for listed securities.

SAVVIS COMMUNICATIONS—5101

Savvis will feature its virtualized services delivery platform, launched in April, at the SIA show this year. The platform uses a utility pricing model and doesn't obligate users to deploy or manage hardware, which Savvis officials say can cut costs by up to 50 percent. Savvis customers EasyScreen, FaceTime Communications, HyperFeed, Mandarin Capital Technologies, Philaldephia Stock Exchange and Tradestream Global will be on hand at the booth demonstrating applications they support on Savvis' network.

SUNGARD—2411 and 2609

Financial technology uber-vendor SunGard's securities processing business will be entering into the anti-money laundering market with this week's release of its Risk Alert for its RemitPro platform. Users of the company's Phase3 securities processing system that use RemitPro will have a one-stop management tool for identity validation for business and individual accounts, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) screening, rules-based anti-money laundering, fraud detection and prevention, and regulatory reporting. RemitPro's Risk Alert receives name and address information directly from Phase3 and compares the information with various databases to verify the identity of existing, new and potential customers. The broker/dealer can determine the frequency of Phase3 Name and Address data feeds to suit their specific needs. Once suspicious accounts are identified, RemitPro generates a report for the firm to provide to the government as required

THOMSON FINANCIAL—3200

Large block-trading venue Harborside+ and Thomson Financial's AutEx will announce a deal this week that will enable AutEx users to submit their indication of interests (IOIs) to Harborside+. The new connection will consist of AutEx users adding Harborside+ to their distribution list. This deal will potentially add the approximately 800 AutEx customers to Harborside+'s approximately 90 existing customers. The new connectivity has already been beta-tested with AutEx and Harborside+ clients. Harborside+ will continue to pre-qualify its clients by maintaining a minimum trade order size of 25,000 shares. As a result, Harborside+ plans to turn on the capability using a selective process in which non-Harborside+ clients are filtered out as well as with current Harborside+ clients that already have a FIX connection with the trading venue. For clients relying on AutEx to deliver their IOIs to Harborside+, Harborside+ will accept only the IOIs that are natural trades, which the company estimated is approximately 50,000 of the 800,000 messages that travel over AutEx on a daily basis. When AutEx users submit an IOI to Harborside+, it will trigger a negotiation process that starts with a call to the potential counterparty from the Harborside+ trading desk.

TRANSACTION NETWORK SERVICES (TNS)—1746

At SIA, TNS will be highlighting its Routable Voice Services. Introduced late last year, this new service offering is built on Voice over IP (VoIP) technology and includes automatic ring-downs (ARDs), manual ring-downs (MRDs), and hoot'n' holler circuits. TNS continues to offer traditional TDM services; however, Routable Voice Services offer additional resiliency and disaster recovery enhancements.

VHAYU TECHNOLOGIES—1700

VhaYu will have on display its new XLStream plug-in for Microsoft Excel 2003, which links the defacto standard spreadsheet to the VhaYu Market Data Solution for real-time analytics that exploit historical and real-time market data. The XLStream is intended to enable quantitative analysts and traders using Excel 2003 to stream data directly to their spreadsheets and run analytics on real-time and historical data. XLStream will let traders monitor their watch lists and run their algorithms against the market, VhaYu officials say.

VOLANTE TECHNOLOGIES with MICROSOFT—3504

Volante has just announced a Beta version of its Volante Metadata Repository (VMR) software, which is designed to help users build a messaging repository for pre- and post-trade operations such as settlement and trade reporting as well as internal transaction messaging. A centralized approach can help firms with their straight through processing (STP) efforts and compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and Basel II.

ZANTAZ—2401

Zantaz, a vendor of e-communications management solutions for compliance, electronic discovery and storage management, will announce the availability of its Hosted Exchange Archive Solution (EAS), a new Zantaz-managed service for enterprise-level email management. The service offers customers a single solution for email management, compliance archiving and data restoration and migration.
